WACO, Texas - For the fourth time in program history, Baylor's women's tennis team will play in the second round of the NCAA tournament. In Friday evening's first round match, the Bears cruised past Texas Southern in the shortest match all season. Baylor picked up the doubles point and first three singles points on its way to a 4-0 win. The shutout marks the seventh team this season that the Bears have held scoreless.

In doubles, Zuzana Cerna and Daniela Covello bageled Velina Boteva and Deyanira Balboa 8-0 on court one and soon after Klara Zrustova and Iva Mihaylova defeated Erika Moraleda and Roxana Martinez 8-1 on court two. Sammi Gottlich and Zuzana Krchnakova did not finish their match against Priscilla Cervantes and Janet Namutebi on court three.

Baylor tore through singles matches and picked up three quick points. Covello blanked Cervantes 6-0, 6-0 on court two while Krchnakova finished up on court five with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Balboa. Clinching Baylor's first NCAA win this season, No. 95 Zrustova bested Moraleda 6-0, 6-1 on court four. No. 16 Cerna, Mihaylova and Clark were all winning on their courts when Zrustova ended the match.

"Well, we were the better team today. I'm really proud of our walk-ons. [Rachel] Clark did a great job on court six and Sammi [Gottlich] gave a solid effort at No. 3 doubles. We just wanted to reward their efforts all season. It's a special thing to be able to play in the NCAA tournament," said head coach Joey Scrivano.

"Texas A&M is always tough. They know us really well and we know them really well. Mentally we knew going into the tournament we would probably have a conference rival in our regional play. It will be a great match to watch and hopefully we'll get a good crowd. We need to play smart and disciplined, and hopefully we'll win."

The win places Baylor in the second round of the tournament where the Bears will play conference-rival No. 32 Texas A&M at 5 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center. Live stats will be available at www.baylorbears.com.
