WACO, Texas -
It took much longer to obtain the final results than normal, but Baylor's women's tennis team downed the Texas A&M Aggies 4-1 in second round action of the NCAA Championships on Sunday afternoon at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The match was suspended twice, first for 30 minutes due to lightning then the second time for 1 hour and 30 minutes due to rain.
Baylor, 24-6, now advances to the NCAA Round of 16 for the fourth time in school history and third straight berth. The Bears will take on fourth-seeded Florida (23-2) in the round of 16. The past two seasons the Gators have eliminated the Bears, in the round of 16 in 2005 and in the quarterfinals last year. The match will be played at 8 a.m. (Central) on Friday, May 18 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
After Baylor lost the doubles point the first time the two teams met earlier this season, the Bears came out strong and dominated the action to claim the doubles point. Iva Mihaylova and Zuzana Zemenova triumphed in their 16th straight match with an 8-1 win over Anna Blagodarova and Michelle Sammons. Next, Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Cerna upset 31st -ranked Tiffany Clifford and Sarah Foster to halt further doubles play.
As stated earlier, weather conditions played havoc with singles action. After playing for approximately 45 minutes, play was halted by lightning in the area. Soon after action resumed, Baylor claimed first-set wins on four courts while the Aggies won two first sets. At 5 p.m., play was suspended again, this time for 90 minutes. By this time freshman Zuzana Chmelarova had given Baylor a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at court four over Blagodarova. Once play resumed, it took Cerna, playing at court two, only five minutes to finish off Sarah Foster, 6-4, 6-2. The Aggies' Nicki Mechem scored her squad's only point when she halted Iva Mihaylova's 17-match win streak with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court five. Just 15 seconds later, Klara Zrustova clinched the win for the Bears by downing Marisa Druss 6-2, 6-3.
"I like how we came out in doubles today. When we played them before they beat us in doubles. To come out today and dominate in doubles was good for us," said Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano. "This was a great match to play before advancing to the Sweet 16. The delays (lightning and rain) may help us down the road in case we face them in Georgia. We dealt with the conditions and responded well to the delays. I like that we are improving as a team."
