ATHENS, Ga. - The Baylor women's tennis tandem of Victoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle kept rolling in the NCAA Doubles Championship with a three-set victory at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Thursday.
The 35th-ranked BU duo posted its second-straight upset by downing 27th-ranked Sofie Oyen and Belinda Woolcock of Florida in the second round of play.
Kisialeva and Shankle rebounded from a 6-4 loss in the opening set to record wins in the final two sets, 6-4, 6-2, to take the win.
The Baylor pairing will now earn ITA All-American status as making the NCAA Doubles Championship quarterfinals is an automatic qualification for that honor.
The victory pushes the Lady Bear tandem's record to 21-5 on the season and 5-4 against ranked foes.
- Under Scrivano, Baylor players have earned 28 All-American honors.
- Kisialeva and Shankle are the first BU duo to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals since Nina Secerbegovic and Ema Burgic accomplished the feat in 2012.
- Kisialeva earns her second-straight All-American doubles honor, after partnering with Burgic to garner the accolade last season.
TOP QUOTE #1
"We're proud of the way the Blair and Vic competed today. Most teams would have found an excuse after losing the first set, but they stuck with doing the right things and it paid off. Great doubles teams find a way to keep it close when they are not playing well. The ladies did that very well and found a rhythm in the second and third sets. It's exciting to see how far they have come this year." - Head coach Joey Scrivano on Blair Shankle and Victoria Kisialeva
On Saturday, Kisialeva and Shankle will take on Georgia's second-ranked Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase at a time to be determined. The UGA pair beat No. 29 Alicia Barnett and Veronica Corning of Northwestern on 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday.
