Women's Tennis Gathers Mixed Results at ITA Clay Courts
Sept. 21, 2000 BALTIMORE - The Baylor women's tennis team's three representatives at the T. Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships had mixed results Thursday in the first round of the main draw. Senior Jahnavi Parekh, the No. 2 seed and the No. 13 player in the nation, won her first round match-up against No. 96 Carolina Mayorga of Kentucky, 6-3, 6-3. After winning twice Wednesday, sophomore Vida Mulec dropped her match on Thursday to 56th-ranked Anneliese Rose of Florida International, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Katja Kovac, ranked No. 51 in the country, lost to Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion, 6-3, 6-3. The results mean Parekh will advance to the second round Friday, where she will face No. 44 Mira Radu of Mississippi. Mulec and Kovac drop to the consolation bracket, Mulec will play 34th-ranked Delphine Troch of William & Mary, while Kovac will square off against William & Mary's Carlijn Buis.
In doubles, the 19th-ranked team of Kovac and Mulec lost to Buis/Troch of William & Mary in the first round on Thursday, 6-1, 6-7 (0), 6-2. The Baylor team falls to the consolation bracket, which continues Friday.
