WACO, Texas - Seniors Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi, along with sophomore Nina Secerbegovic, each triumphed twice on Sunday to earn a spot in the quarterfinals at the Wilson/ITA Texas Regional at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.
Broosova, the top seed in the main draw, disposed of Sam Houston State's Federica Denti in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, then took down Rice's Julie Chao in two sets, winning 6-2, 6-2. The sixth-seeded Borsanyi was also dominant in her two wins, beating Roxana Enica of Stephen F. Austin 6-1, 6-2, before downing Texas' Caroline Larsson 6-0, 6-1.
Secerbegovic, the eighth seed, also had two straight-sets wins. First she beat Rice's Rebecca Lin 6-0, 6-1, then took down Texas A&M's Stephanie Davidson 6-2, 6-0.
"As a whole we are not playing our best tennis," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "But it's definitely good to see Lenka, Nina and Csilla advance to the quarter-finals."
Also in singles, fourth-seeded Taylor Ormond reached the round of 16 with a three- set win over Rice's Ana Guzman 6-7(6), 6-0, 6-2, but then lost to ninth-seeded Kayla Duncan of Texas A&M 6-4, 7-5. Karolina Filipiak, who upset a No. 9 seed yesterday fell in the second round to Stephanie Davidson of Texas A&M in a three-setter 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4.
In the consolation round, Carla Lindlar bounced back from her loss yesterday to win both of her matches on Sunday. First, she took down SFA's Alina Shazhko 6-3, 7-5, then beat Houston's Joanna Kacprzyk 6-2, 6-4.
"Carla did a great job of bouncing back from a tough day yesterday," Scrivano said. "She played with more focus and discipline today."
In doubles action, Broosova and Borsanyi fell in the second round to North Texas' duo of Irina Paraschiv and Madura Ranganathan 9-7.
Action at the Wilson/ITA Regional continues tomorrow at the Baylor Tennis Center with the quarterfinals of the main draw singles beginning at 11:30 a.m.
