The Baylor women's tennis snagged six victories in singles and two doubles wins during the first day of action at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Thursday.

Six Lady Bears played in the 128-player singles draw with seniors Jordaan Sanford and Alex Leatu, sophomores Makenzie Craft, Victoria Kisialeva and Kiah Generette, and freshman Blair Shankle all advancing to the round of 32. Meanwhile, three BU tandems played in the 64-team doubles draw with Sanford and Generette and Kisialeva and Shankle advancing.

In first round action, Shankle defeated Monika Sirilova of TCU, 6-1, 6-2. Then advanced to the round of 64 where she took down Davina Meza of Texas-El Paso, 6-2, 6,2. Shankle will face Texas' Breaunna Addison in the third round.

Makenzie Craft bested Alena Shichkova of UT-San Antonio, 6-1, 6-3. In round two, Craft beat out Sarah Toti of Texas-Tech, 7-5, 6-4. She now will go up against Simona Parajova of TCU in the next round.

In the round of 128, Alex Leatu defeated Jessica Birowski of UT Arlington 6-2, 6-2. Advancing to the second round, Leatu beat Wanda Beguelin of UT-Pan America 6-2, 6-1. She will now face Nikki Sanders of TTU in the round of 32.

Sanford, Kisialeva, and Generette had an opening-round bye to automatically advance to round two.

In the round of 64, Sanford beat Maider Martin of Texas A&M Corpus Christi with a perfect win, 6-0, 6-0. She will now go up against Rebeca Calvillo of UTEP in the third round.

Kisialeva defeated Erin Walker of Abilene Christian, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. In round three, Kisialeva will take on Milllie Nichols of TCU.

Generette was leading Mimi Fotopoulos of TCU, 6-3, before the Horned Frog retired from the match due to injury. The win puts Generette into the third round vs. Jana McCord of Texas A&M

After a bye in the first round, Generette and Sanford beat out Lina Hallgren and Alena Shichkova of UT San Antonio, 8-1. They will face Stefania Hristov and Cristina Stancu of Texas A&M in the third round.

Following a bye in the first round, Kisialeva and Shankle took down Yana Erkeeva and Anna Kate Anderson of SMU, 8-4. That win propels the BU duo to a third-round match against Lina Padegimaite and Annat Rabinovich of Texas.

In the first doubles round, Craft and Leatu faltered against Micah Hermsdorf and Brittney Reed of Abilene Christian, 8-6.

Action will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday with the third-round of doubles.
