LUBBUCK, Texas - Freshman Natalie Holmes was the lone women's tennis player to compete in singles action for Baylor as qualifying for the ITA Southwest Regional got underway at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbuck, Texas, on Friday. Holmes garnered back-to-back wins and is now just one win away from advancing to the event's top draw where five Baylor teammates await to begin action.
In the first round of qualifying, Holmes easily trumped Sarah Burton, 6-1, 6-2, of Texas-Pan America. Her second match of the day saw Holmes come out with the same intensity, defeating Texas State's Alejandra Gulida (6-3, 6-3) to advance to the final round of qualifying.
Baylor's tennis squad also began doubles action on Friday. Second-seeded Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova received a first round bye, but were joined in the round of 16 the team of Karolina Filipiak and Taylor Ormond, along with Jana Bielikova and Zuzana Chmelarova.
Filipiak and Ormond teamed up to top Pavi Frances and Kristen Reed, 9-7, while Bielikova and Chmelarova earned an opening round victory against Texas' Jane Pringle and Sarah Lancaster, 8-5.
Tournament action continues at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday at the McLeod Tennis Center on the campus of Texas Tech University.
