WACO, Texas – Baylor’s two doubles teams in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional field cruised to easy wins to advance to the Round of 16 on Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Playing in their first matches as a team, the combinations of Nina Secerbegovic/Sona Novakova and Karolina Filipiak/Cristina Danaila each collected victories in the Round of 32.
The third-seeded duo of Secerbegovic and Novakova found their stride early in the match on their way to a 8-2 win over Sam Houston State’s Sheridan Currie and Cally Woerner.
“Sona and Nina were impressive today, they able to execute at such a high level,” head coach Joey Scrivano said. “It just didn’t take long for them to jell and get in sync.”
In Baylor’s only other match on the day, Filipiak and Danaila won their debut as a duo 8-4 over Bianca Discordia and Mia Matuszak of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
“Karolina and Cristina started a little slow, but they both got better as the match wore on,” Scrivano said. “By the end of the match they seemed to get in stride and play well together.”
One round of singles originally scheduled for Saturday was cancelled due to rain and lightning in the area. Both singles and doubles will continue on Sunday, Oct. 24, at the Baylor Tennis Center. For updated brackets and match times, see the attached documents.
