COLUMBUS, Ohio - Freshman Taylor Ormond single handedly took down two of the eight seeded participants in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships to advance to the semifinals at The Racquet Club of Columbus on Friday.
Ormond began her day watching Baylor's doubles team of Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova down the 11th-ranked team of Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe from Fresno State, 8-6. The win improved the duo to 9-2 on the season and gave them their sixth consecutive win, including three straight over nationally ranked opponents.
Following Baylor's doubles victory, Ormond took the court for her first match of the day. Fresno State's Gloria, ranked third in the nation, had just been ousted from the doubles competition by the Bears, quickly had to refocus for a singles bout with Ormond. The unranked freshman made quick work of Gloria in the first set, 6-2, before earning spot in the quarterfinals with a hard-fought 7-6 (4) second-set victory.
Gloria entered the championship as the No. 3 seed.
Ormond had a brief break in action before returning to the court to face No. 60 Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech. The seventh-seeded McDowell fell behind early and dropped the first set 6-4, before pulling even with a 6-2 second-set win. With the match tied, Ormond took control, not allowing McDowell to win a game en route to a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win.
The two wins improved Ormond to 13-3 on the season and her third consecutive win over nationally ranked opponents. Despite a loss to teammate Broosova on Oct. 23, Ormond has now won 10 of her last 11 matches this fall.
"Taylor played some solid tennis today and fought hard to beat two quality opponents," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We are looking forward to some big matches tomorrow."
In consolation action, No. 54 Broosova faced 23rd-ranked Kirsten Flower from Georgia Tech. Broosova earned a straight-set victory, 6-0, 6-4, to move on to the consolation quarterfinals.
Play resumes from The Racquet Club of Columbia at 9:30 a.m. with the consolation quarterfinals and is followed by main draw singles action before concluding the day with quarterfinal doubles matches.
