WACO, Texas -
Baylor's women's tennis team is ranked No. 19 in the first set of Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings of 2014 that were released on Thursday.
"The rankings have no bearing on what we need to do to become a great team," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We need to get back to the practice court and keep building. If we can become a team that loves the process, the rankings in the end will work out nicely for us."
Last season, Baylor finished ranked No. 20 in the country, after posting a 17-15 record. Baylor will be looking to capture its ninth Big 12 regular season title in the last 10 years and the seventh league tournament crown in the last nine years.
Individually, the Lady Bears have one ranked singles player in sophomore Kiah Generette, who is 38th in the country. Meanwhile, BU's doubles tandem of Victoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle is ranked 37th.
Generette, who was unranked in the September edition of the ITA rankings, produced a 7-4 record in the fall. She advanced to the final of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships and won three matches over ranked foes. Last year, Generette finished the season 16-10, while playing primarily at the No. 4 position for BU.
Kisialeva and Shankle tallied a 9-2 record in fall play, including a 1-1 mark against ranked opponents. The pairing won the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational title and reached the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
Baylor is one of just 10 schools nationally to have both its men's team and women's squad ranked in the top 20. The Bears are ranked No. 8 nationally.
The Lady Bears will start the 2014 season with a trip to Honolulu, Hawaii to face Hawai'i at 4 p.m. on Jan 11.
