Freshman Jelena Stanivuk has been added to the women's tennis roster and will be with the team Friday when Baylor opens its spring season against Brigham Young University in Honolulu, Hawai'i, head coach Joey Scrivano announced Wednesday.
Stanivuk joins the team from Tucepi, Croatia, and is registered to begin class work at Baylor when classes resume from the holiday break.
While playing in Bosnia, Stanivuk ranked in the top-5 at the under 12, under 14 and under 16 levels. She also earned her highest junior ranking in Europe at the U-16 level, climbing as high as No. 3 in the rankings.
"I'm really excited about having Jelena join our program," said Scrivano. "I think she is going to be the total package for us. She has the playing style and the mindset to really make a big impact on this program. We really have high hopes for Jelena and once she gets settled in she's going to be challenging our top players every day."
Stanivuk's best juniors result came when she reached the Round of 16 in the 23rd International Junior Championships of Croatia in 2005. She was also a staple on the Bosnia National Junior team and was on the National Croatian Junior Championship Team for Makarska.
