CORAL GABLES, Fla.
- Baylor's fifth-ranked women's tennis team travels to No. 6 Miami for a matchup featuring top 10 teams in Coral Gables, Fla. on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET.
The Lady Bears started the season 2-0 with wins over No. 69 Harvard and No. 65 Brown in last weekend's ITA Kickoff Weekend Qualifier. With the victories, Baylor earned its spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Baylor swept both matches by a score of 4-0.
Against Harvard, No. 24 Nina Secerbegovic, junior Taylor Ormond, and newcomer Carla Lindlar posted singles wins, while the Lenka Broosova/Csilla Borsanyi and Ormond/Karolina Filipiak duos combined to win the doubles point. In the Brown match, Secerbegovic and Lindlar each earned their second victories of the season, and Filipiak earned her first. In doubles, Filipiak and Ormond won again to go along with a victory from Lindlar and Secerbegovic.
Broosova, a two-time All-American, entered the dual-match season needing one win to break the all-time singles wins record at Baylor. Broosova sits tied with record-holder Katja Kovac, who recorded 127 victories from 1998-2002. Broosova, who plays Baylor's No. 1 singles position, led each of her matches against Brown and Harvard, but they went unfinished due to Baylor scoring its 4-0 victories at other positions.
Baylor holds a 3-4 record all-time against Miami, including a two-match winning streak. The match on Saturday will mark the first meeting since then-No. 5 Baylor swept then-No. 12 Miami 4-0 in the Round of 16 at the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Baylor played Miami twice in the 2008 season, winning each match.
Miami holds a 3-0 record thus far in 2010 with sweeps over Florida Atlantic, No. 62 Boston, and No. 57 Mississippi State. The Hurricanes also punched their ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships last weekend.
