- Baylor's seventh-ranked women's tennis team will host No. 27 SMU on Wednesday before traveling to face Big 12 rival No. 35 Texas in Austin on Sunday.
The Lady Bears (13-2, 4-0 Big 12) enter the week riding a seven-match win streak which includes four Big 12 wins sandwiched around three top-15 wins, as well as one week ranked No. 1 in the nation. Most recently, Baylor took back-to-back 6-1 victories over Big 12 opponents Oklahoma State and Oklahoma, ranked 56th and 34th, respectively.
During the weekend, Baylor's top three players each added to their singles winning streaks. No. 18 Nina Secerbegovic remains undefeated in singles during the dual-match season with a 15-0 record, including six consecutive wins at No. 3 and now nine straight at the No. 2 position. At No. 1, fifth-ranked Lenka Broosova came back from a set down against OU's 90th-ranked Ana-Maria Constantinescu to earn her fifth straight victory, while No. 65 Taylor Ormond won her sixth consecutive match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
The Lady Bears earned the doubles point in both matches over the weekend led by the eighth-ranked pairing of Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi.
Baylor's Wednesday opponent, SMU, brings a 17-2 overall record into the match, including a 6-2 mark against nationally ranked opponents. The Lady Bears will be the first match of the season against a top-20 team for the Mustangs.
SMU is led by 29th-ranked Marta Lesniak, who has compiled a 17-0 record in dual-match singles play at the No. 1 position. The Mustangs also possess a solid No. 2 player in 97th-ranked Aleksandra Malyarchikova, who is 14-2 overall, and 10-0 at No. 2. In doubles, Lesniak and partner Pavi Francis are 9-3 during the dual season and ranked No. 28 in the nation.
On Saturday, Baylor will travel to Austin to take on the No. 35 Texas Longhorns, who enter the week with a 6-3 record, including a 2-0 mark in the Big 12. The Longhorns are riding a four-match winning streak and will take on Texas Tech on Thursday prior to facing Baylor. UT is led by their top player in 23rd-ranked Aeriel Ellis, who is one of three Longhorns ranked in the top 60. Krista Damico checks in at No. 52, while Vanja Corovic is ranked 60th. In doubles, the pairing of Ellis and Corovic is ranked No. 52.
The Lady Bears bring a nine-match winnings streak over Texas into the match, which includes two victories in each of the last four seasons. The last time the two teams faced, Baylor took a 4-1 victory to win the Big 12 Tournament Championships in Norman, Okla.
The Wednesday, March 24th match against SMU is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center. On Saturday, March 28, the Lady Bears and Texas will start at noon at UT's Penick-Allison Complex. Follow live scoring at www.BaylorBears.com for Wednesday's match.
