IRVING, Texas - Senior Lenka Broosova was named the Big 12 Player of the Week for her performance during the week of March 22-28, as announced by league officials. The award is the first of the season for Broosova, and the fourth in her record-breaking career.
A native of Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, Broosova helped the second-ranked Lady Bears to a pair of wins over No. 29 SMU and No. 35 Texas to improve their record to 15-2 overall, 5-0 in the Big 12. Against SMU, the fifth-ranked Broosova dropped only three games on her way to a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 29 Marta Lesniak. Three days later, Broosova battled to a three-set win over No. 23 Aeriel Ellis of Texas, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. The wins improved her singles win streak to six matches.
In doubles, Broosova and partner Csilla Borsanyi, ranked eighth went 1-0 on the week with a win over the 52nd-ranked Texas duo of Ellis and Vanja Corovic 8-4. Against SMU, the Baylor duo didn't finish the match due to tournament scoring, as the Lady Bears had already secured the doubles point before Broosova and Borsanyi finished their match. The one win, however, gave the pair a four-match winning streak.
Broosova had won the award three times previously, all coming during the 2009 season. She was named the conference top player on March 16, March 23, and April 6 last season. It is also the second of the season for a Baylor student-athlete, as Nina Secerbegovic received the honor two weeks ago.
Over the course of the 2009-10 season, Broosova has compiled a 21-5 singles record, including a 14-1 mark in singles play during the dual-match season. In doubles, Broosova has posted a 14-3 overall mark, including 13-2 during the dual-match season.
The Lady Bears' next test will be on Saturday, April 3, when they host sixth-ranked Notre Dame in a rematch of last year's NCAA Quarterfinal in which the Fighting Irish took a 4-3 victory. The match will be at the Baylor Tennis Center and is scheduled for a noon start.
