WACO, Texas - In its only match of the week, Baylor's second-ranked women's tennis team will take on sixth-ranked Notre Dame in a clash of two of the nation's elite on Saturday at noon at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The Lady Bears have had success against the nation's top 10 this season, but will be focused on avenging a loss to Notre Dame at last season's NCAA Quarterfinal. Baylor, who had beaten Notre Dame on their own courts earlier in 2009 by a score of 5-2, took the 4-3 loss to just miss a trip to the Final Four.
This season, Baylor (15-2) is 4-1 against top-10 competition, and holds a 13-2 mark versus all ranked opponents. The Lady Bears will enter the match putting a nine-match win streak on the line. Baylor also features four players ranked in the top 100 in singles, and one ranked doubles pair. In singles, Lenka Broosova (14-1 dual-match, 21-5 overall) is ranked sixth, Nina Secerbegovic (17-0, 26-2) is ranked 16th, Taylor Ormond (11-4, 16-7) is ranked 59th and Csilla Borsanyi (6-8, 15-0) is ranked 97th. The doubles tandem of Broosova and Borsanyi is ranked 12th and has compiled an overall record of 14-3, including a 13-2 mark in dual-match play.
The Fighting Irish bring an identical 15-2 mark on the season into the match, and feature two ranked singles players, as well as one ranked doubles pair. Notre Dame is 6-2 on the year against ranked opponents, including a 1-1 mark against the nation's top 10. Earlier this year, they knocked off No. 1-ranked Northwestern 5-2.
In singles, Kristy Frilling, ranked 18th, anchors the No. 1 position for UND and enters with a 14-3/20-6 record, including a three-match win streak. Chrissie McGaffigan, ranked 118th, plays the No. 3 position for Notre Dame and has a 12-5/12-6 record on the season. Also in singles, Notre Dame's hottest player is Cosmina Ciobanu, who enters with an 11-match winning streak, playing both the No. 4 and No. 5 positions.
In doubles for the Irish, Frilling and partner Kali Krisik have been unbeatable during the dual-match season, posting a perfect 13-0 record. The pair holds a 20-2 record on the season and is ranked eighth in the nation.
The match is slated to start with doubles action at noon, followed by singles play, all at the Baylor Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University. Follow live scoring on www.BaylorBears.com.
