IRVING, Texas -
For the first time this season, Baylor women's tennis senior Jordaan Sanford
has been named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The Diamond Bar, Calif., native went undefeated in singles during Baylor's three matches this past week. She was instrumental in helping the 17th-ranked Lady Bears record road wins at No. 56 TCU, No. 57 Kansas and No. 69 Kansas State. The victories pushed BU's record to 17-6 and 6-0 in Big 12 action.
The senior opened the week with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sofiko Kadzhaya of TCU and then followed that up with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Kansas' Maria Jose Cardona, 6-1, 6-3. Sanford ended the weekend only giving up two games against Kansas State's Maria Panaite, helping her team improve to 6-0 in Big 12 play.
In doubles action, Sanford and Victoria Kisialeva downed Kansas's Maria Jose Cardona and Maria Belen Luduena at the top of the lineup.
For the season, the 56th-ranked Sanford leads the Lady Bears with an 18-2 record in dual matches and is undefeated in conference action. She has not lost a match since Feb. 15 with a 12-0 record during that stretch, including two unfinished matches.
It is Baylor's 32nd Big 12 honor in the 18-year history of the Big 12 Conference. Sanford is the 16th Lady Bear to be recognized and the first since the Ema Burgic won the honor on April 23, 2013.
Sanford shared this week's honor with Breaunna Addison of Texas.
BU men's tennis player, Michel Dornbusch, earned the league's women's Player of the Week award.
It is the first time a Baylor men's and women's tennis player have won the award in the same week since Patrick Pradella and Ema Burgic accomplished the feat on April 23, 2013.
The Lady Bears will be back in action on Wednesday as they hit the road to face No. 21 Rice.
