- For the second time in three weeks, Baylor's Nina Secerbegovic
was named the Big 12 Player of the Week for women's tennis, conference officials announced Monday.
Secerbegovic turned in a perfect 2-0 record in both singles and doubles to help Baylor run its team win streak to seven matches with defeats of No. 21 Texas A&M and No. 18 Notre Dame.
In singles action, the Baylor senior came out on top against back-to-back ranked opponents, first taking down Texas A&M's 101st-ranked Nazari Urbina in comeback fashion. Secerbegovic dropped the first set 2-6, but came back to win the next two 6-4, 6-4. Against Notre Dame, Secerbegovic played the top spot in Baylor's lineup and was victorious in straight sets against No. 54 Shannon Mathews, 6-3, 7-6(7).
In doubles, Secerbegovic and partner Ema Burgic continued their domination of highly-ranked opponents with a victory over Notre Dame's fifth-ranked pair of Mathews and Kristy Frilling, 8-5. The win against the UND pair also helped Baylor sweep the doubles point. Two days earlier, Secerbegovic and Burgic defeated Texas A&M's top pair of Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Wen Sun 8-5.
For the season, Secerbegovic now has a seven-match singles win streak to move her record to 21-3 overall, including an 8-3 mark against ranked opponents. In doubles, the Secerbegovic/Burgic pair is 6-3 with a 4-1 mark against ranked opponents.
The weekly conference honor is the fifth of Secerbegovic's career, including one earlier this season on March 26.
Baylor will be back in action at No. 10 Texas in Austin on April 14. The match is slated to begin at noon at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
