WACO, Texas – Continuing Big 12 Conference play, Baylor's 28th-ranked women's tennis team will host its final home match of the regular season against 26th-ranked Texas at 5 p.m. on Friday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
“I wish I could talk about the Baylor-Texas rivalry, but it doesn’t mean anything right now,” head coach Joey Scrivano said. “When your team as a whole is struggling to have one good practice from start to finish, rivalries don’t really matter. For us showing up and competing hard for a full practice seems impossible.”
Baylor (13-13, 6-1) recently completed a successful weekend on the road, earning two Big 12 victories against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
The 17th-ranked tandem of Ema Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva is BU’s most successful pairing, owning a 14-3 dual match mark and a 5-2 Big 12 record. The Lady Bears have been able to earn the doubles point for eight straight matches.
On the singles side, the 10th-ranked Burgic has won 12 matches in a row in the top spot for BU and has a 20-5 record. Kiah Generette, who has won four matches straight in the fourth spot, is also 10-8 in dual match play. Burgic and Generette are each 7-0 in conference action.
Texas (13-9, 6-1) is coming off of a 6-1 victory against Kansas State. Texas’ lineup boasts two ranked singles players in 36th-ranked Breaunna Addison, who is 12-3 on court 2, and 38th-ranked Aeriel Ellis, who is 12-6 at the top of the lineup. In doubles, the Longhorns are led by 13th-ranked Addison and Noel Scott with a 12-10 record on court 1.
Baylor trails the all-time series 14-34 against the Longhorns. The last time these two teams met, BU was lost a 4-3 on the road on April 14, 2012.
“It’s amazing how a 13-13 team thinks they have done something,” Scrivano said. “This team needs way too many motivational speeches to simply give it their best. At this rate, I’ll be surprised if we’re even competitive with Texas on Friday.”
After the match, Baylor will travel for its final match of the regular season against Texas Tech at 5 p.m. on April 19.
