The third-ranked Baylor women's tennis team travels to College Station, Texas to compete in the 2008 Big 12 Women's Tennis Championships from April 24-27. Last weekend, Baylor secured its fourth-straight Big 12 regular season championship with a 7-0 victory at No. 21 Texas. The Lady Bears, 10-0 in conference play this season, completed the Big 12 schedule undefeated for the third time in the last four years.

Baylor finished the regular season with a No. 3 national ranking after a 25-2 season. The Lady Bears' only two losses came to teams ranked No. 1, Stanford and Northwestern. The Wildcats finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the ITA rankings, while the Cardinal are ranked second in the country. The Lady Bears have won 23 of their last 24 dual matches. Baylor rose to No. 2 in the ITA rankings, setting up a showdown with No. 1 Northwestern. After dropping to as low as sixth, Baylor has steadily climbed back up the rankings to third.

Baylor dominated No. 21 Texas 7-0 in Austin to win its fourth-straight Big 12 championship. With both teams entering the match unblemished in Big 12 play, the winner would own the conference title outright. Baylor secured the doubles point before winning all six singles matches, the first three in straight sets. Baylor wins its fifth overall Big 12 title and its fourth-straight conference championship with the win.

Baylor owns a 12-9 all-time record in the Big 12 tournament, including tournament titles in 2006 and 2007. Two other times Baylor has played in the championship match. In 2005, Baylor lost 4-3 to Texas in the finals, while the Longhorns topped the Lady Bears 5-0 in 2000. Head coach Joey Scrivano holds a 9-3 record in the conference tournament, with two Big 12 championships and three finals appearances during his tenure.

The Baylor women's tennis team held its spot at No. 3 in the nation in the latest rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released on Tuesday afternoon.

   The Lady Bears, 25-2 overall and 11-0 in Big 12 action, equal their second-highest ranking in program history. Earlier this season Baylor reached as high as No. 2 in the ITA rankings for one week before suffering a loss to top-ranked Northwestern. The Lady Bears were also ranked third for the week prior to their move to the number two spot.

   In addition to its No. 3 national ranking, Baylor has four singles players ranked in the nation this week. Lenka Broosova dropped two spots to No. 17 overall after winning her singles match against Texas on court two. Zuzana Zemenova improved one spot to No. 24 in the nation after winning in straight sets over the No. 64 player against Texas. Taylor Ormond is ranked No. 38 in the nation this week, while Jana Bielikova moved to No. 100 overall.

   The Lady Bears also continue to have two doubles teams included in the ITA rankings as the duo of Zemenova and Broosova are ranked fifth in the nation and Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk are No. 59 in the newest rankings.

Baylor senior Zuzana Zemenova was named the Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week the league announced on April 14. The award is the third weekly honor for Zemenova this season and a Big 12 record seventh accolade of her career.

   Zemenova collected two singles victories and two doubles victories while giving up only three singles points for sixth-ranked Baylor last week.

   With the two singles wins, Zemenova moves into second place in school history with 111 career victories. She also moves her career Big 12 record to 36-0 with all matches coming at No. 1 singles.

   This marks the fourth week that a Baylor player has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week. Baylor swept the first three weekly awards, with Zemenova earning the honor during the first week of the dual match season. Taylor Ormond was named the player of the week on March 10, and Zemenova tallied her second award of the season on March 17.
