April 23, 2013

IRVING, Texas - The Baylor men's and women's tennis duo of Patrick Pradella and Ema Burgic swept the Big 12 Player of the Week honors for their performances over the past week, league officials announced on Tuesday.

Both players were 2-0 in singles action to help their teams post perfect 2-0 records during the week. The wins propelled BU to its 11th Big 12 regular season title on the men's side and its ninth conference crown for the women. It is the first time a Baylor men's and women's tennis player have won the award in the same week since Mate Zsiga and Nina Secerbegovic accomplished the feat on April 9, 2012.

Pradella delivered two wins over ranked opponents as Baylor took care of No. 19 Texas, 6-1, and No. 37 TCU, 5-2. At No. 1 singles in those matches, the junior took down No. 40 Soren Hess-Olesen of Texas and No. 94 Nick Chappell of TCU. He and partner Roberto Maytin also scored a victory over TCU's JT Sundling and Max Stevens at No. 2 doubles to lead BU to a 5-0 mark in doubles points during Big 12 play.

This season, Pradella, ranked No. 35, is 18-4 overall, including a 10-2 mark at No. 1 singles and a 4-1 record in Big 12 play. He has won his last three matches and is 9-1 in his last 10 contests.

Pradella's honor gives BU winners in back-to-back weeks for the fourth time in three years. Sophomore Mate Zsiga won the award last week. Baylor has now won at least two Player of the Week honors in nine of the last 12 years. Overall, it is Baylor's 34rd Big 12 weekly honor since 2000.

Over the weekend, the 10th-ranked Burgic led the Lady Bears to victories over No. 26 Texas, 4-3, and No. 15 Texas Tech, 4-3, to claim a share of the Big 12 regular season title. In those matches, she defeated No. 36 Breaunna Addison (Texas) and No. 93 Samantha Adams (Texas Tech) at No. 1 singles.

The sophomore has won 14 matches in a row and is undefeated in Big 12 action (9-0). In singles, Burgic has tallied a 22-5 dual match record, which leads the team at the top of the lineup.

In doubles, alongside Victoria Kisialeva, the 17th-ranked duo has a 16-3 dual match record. The tandem pulled off upsets against No. 13 Addison/Scott of Texas and No. 15 Adams/Kilgo of Texas Tech over the past week.

The award gives Baylor at least two Player of the Week honors for eight straight years. Burgic is just the third Lady Bear to be honored three times in one season, joining NCAA champion Zuzana Zemenova (2008) and All-American Lenka Broosova (2009).

It is Baylor's 31st Big 12 honor in the 17-year history of the Big 12 Conference. Burgic won the award earlier this season on March 11 and April 9.

With the No. 1 seed locked up for the Big 12 Championship, the men's team will have a first-round bye and face the winner of TCU and Oklahoma State at noon on Saturday in Norman, Okla.

The women's squad will also be the No. 1 seed at next week's event and awaits the winner of Kansas and Iowa State. BU will play its first match at 9 a.m. on Friday.
