Senior WT Trio Named Academic All-Big 12

IRVING, Texas - Baylor's senior trio of Diana Nakic, Sona Novakova and Nina Secerbegovic were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team for women's tennis, league officials announced on Tuesday.

Nakic and Novakova each earned the honor in their first eligible year to be recognized and were named to the first team. Secerbegovic earned second-team honors, earning league all-academic status for the third consecutive season. Placing three on this year's list, the Lady Bears have now had at least three honorees for the fourth consecutive season.

Nakic, a distribution management and technology major, is Baylor's highest-ranked singles player at No. 12 and leads the team with 31 victories on the season. A native of Velenje, Slovenia, she went 8-1 in Big 12 singles and 6-3 in doubles playing in both the No. 1 and No. 2 position in the lineup.

Novakova, a general studies major from Slapanice, Czech Republic, is tied for second on the team with 25 singles wins, which includes a 7-1 mark in Big 12 singles and a 6-3 mark in league doubles. Ranked No. 47 in singles, she is tied for the team lead with a singles winning percentage of .893.

Secerbegovic, a computer information systems major, is tied for second on the team with 25 singles wins and tied for the team lead with an .893 winning percentage. The Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, native is ranked No. 24 in singles and No. 17 in doubles with partner Ema Burgic. She currently has an 11-match win streak in singles and a five-match win streak in doubles.

The league honored a total of 28 women, including 19 on the first team and nine on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Next, Baylor will begin the postseason as the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Conference Championship on April 26-28 in College Station, Texas. The Lady Bears will take on the winner of Thursday's Kansas-Oklahoma match at 3 p.m. on Friday.
