WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's and women's tennis teams earned a combined nine Big 12 Conference positional medals, the conference announced Monday. The Baylor women took five medals, including two golds, while the men won one gold and three silvers for a total of four.
With a 10-1 conference record, junior Katja Kovac repeated as the Big 12 women's No. 2 singles champion. Kovac won the award in 2000 with a 9-2 record. Junior Frida Borjesson brought home the Bears' second gold medal as she went 10-1 in conference to win the No. 6 singles title.
The Baylor women also won a pair of silver medals in singles. Sophomore Vida Mulec tied for the silver at No. 3 singles with a 6-4 conference record, and senior Karin Andersson was the runner-up at No. 4 singles with an 8-3 mark.
A 9-3 record in Big 12 play earned the doubles team of Kovac and senior Jahnavi Parekh the silver medal at No. 1 doubles.
The men's conference medals reflected Baylor strength at the bottom of the lineup, with the Bears taking the gold at No. 5 singles and earning silvers at Nos. 4 and 6.
Freshman Matias Marin went 5-2 in conference after joining the Bears in January to earn the No. 5 singles championship. Sophomore Zoltan Papp, the No. 4 singles champion in 2000, earned runner-up honors at the same position this season with a 5-2 record in Big 12 play. Freshman Cory Ross was the runner-up at No. 6 singles, thanks to a 5-2 conference record.
In doubles, freshman Reiner Neurohr and senior Mark Williams teamed to earn the silver at No. 1 doubles. The pair, ranked among the top 30 in the nation all season, went 5-2 in conference in 2001.
The Baylor men and women each lost in the semifinals of the 2001 Big 12 Championships and now await word from the NCAA concerning further postseason play. NCAA Tournament sites and selections will be announced Thursday afternoon.
