Four Baylor women's tennis student-athletes have been selected to take part in the NCAA Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships starting May 21 in Athens, Ga.
The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee made the announcement Wednesday that Kiah Generette and Jordaan Sanford are both at-large selections to the 64-person singles bracket, while Victoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle are the automatic qualifier from the Big 12 Conference into the 32-team doubles draw.
The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will be held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on May 21-26 in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of team championship play.
This season, Generette is 21-15 overall and 14-11 in dual-match play. She has played at the top of the lineup for most of the spring season, amassing a 12-10 mark. The Signal Hill, Calif., native, was ranked No. 42 in the latest ITA singles listings.
Sanford, a senior from Diamond Bar, Calif., is 27-4 overall in singles play and 22-2 in dual-match action. She has won her last 16 decisions and went 9-0 for BU in Big 12 play. Sanford owns a 17-2 mark at the No. 3 singles spot for the Lady Bears.
Kisialeva and Shankle have not played a match together since March 19, but the duo was still ranked No. 34 by the ITA. Before teaming up with different partners, the pairing was 19-5 on the season and 10-3 in dual-match play. Kisialeva was selected to the doubles' tournament a year ago, but was unable to compete when her partner, Ema Burgic, was injured.
Kisialeva and Shankle earned an automatic bid into the doubles event by being the highest ranked tandem in the Big 12.
As a team, the 14th-ranked Lady Bears will face fourth-seeded Texas A&M Corpus Christi., in the first round of NCAA Team Championship action. That match is scheduled for Friday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center. The winner of that contest will take on the winner of the match between Rice and Denver in the second round on Saturday, May 10 at 5 p.m.
