WACO, Texas - Baylor's No. 1-ranked women's tennis team earned the top overall seed and was selected as a host for the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship on May 14-15. The Lady Bears will be making their sixth consecutive and 13th overall appearance in the NCAA Championships.
Baylor is led by head coach Joey Scrivano, who will be making his 10th appearance in the NCAA tournament as a head coach, including his seventh at the helm of the Baylor program. The Lady Bears have made the Round of 16 in each of the last five seasons, including two appearances in the Elite Eight and a Final Four berth in 2008.
"(Being the No. 1 overall seed) is very special and it shows how far the program has come over the last eight years," Scrivano said. "It gives us a lot of confidence going forward. When you have a 27-2 record and you played one of the toughest schedules in the country, you deserve to be No. 1."
Baylor will be joined by their first-round opponent Northwestern State, along with Tulsa and North Texas. Northwestern State will take on the Lady Bears at 2 p.m. on Friday, just after the conclusion of an 11 a.m. tilt between Tulsa and North Texas. Northwestern State earned an automatic bid after winning the Southland Conference Tournament, while Tulsa won Conference USA and North Texas won the Sun Belt Conference.
"We love playing at home," Scrivano said. "The teams that are coming here are tough teams and very deserving of making the tournament. We just have to be ready to play. When you are consistently in the top 5 in the country, teams are going to come after you. It's a role we are comfortable in."
Scrivano's club won their sixth consecutive Big 12 regular season title and their fifth consecutive Big 12 Tournament title this season. Baylor will enter the NCAAs with a record of 27-2, which includes their third straight season with a perfect 11-0 mark in Big 12 play.
In singles, fifth-ranked Lenka Broosova has a dual-match record of 23-2 at the No. 1 position, while teammate Nina Secerbegovic, ranked 20th, has a record of 27-2 while going 21-2 at No. 2 and 6-0 at No. 3. Taylor Ormond, ranked 69th, plays No. 3 for Baylor and has a record of 16-6. Baylor's 97th-ranked Csilla Borsanyi is possibly the team's hottest player after running her win streak to 12 matches and earning the Big 12 Championship's Most Valuable Player award for the second consecutive season.
"I think we deserved it," Broosova said. "We have been working hard since September, and its something that shows us that hard work does pay off. Its great being at home, I love playing front of Baylor fans."
Tickets for first and second round action are $3 for students and $5 for adults.
