Women's Tennis Adds Two to Signing Class

WACO, Texas – Head women’s tennis coach Joey Scrivano announced the signing of Rachael Reed and Ema Burgic to National Letters of Intent for the 2011-12 academic year Friday. The additions bring Baylor’s signing class to four members for the upcoming season.

Incoming freshmen Reed and Burgic will join early signees Megan Horter and Nicole Kosakowski in the Lady Bears signing class. Reed hails from The Woodlands, Texas, while Burgic will join the Lady Bears from Lukavac, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“These two young ladies will make great additions to an already strong signing class,” Scrivano said. “Both of them have a great desire to come to Baylor and work on their skills to become outstanding college tennis players. Rachael and Ema are both great students and will fit in with our program very well.”

Reed, considered a five-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net, is the 35th-ranked player in the United States and the second-ranked player in Texas. In matches recorded on TennisRecruiting.net, Reed owns a 60-28 overall record, including a 23-10 mark against of five-star recruits and a 23-2 record against four-star recruits.

Reed, a home-schooled student, was a 2009 state champion in singles and a 2009 regional champion in mixed doubles. She has also been a finalist in the Phoenix Super National G16, the Tucson Copper Bowl National G16 and the Texas section Excellence tournament.

Burgic, who will join fellow Bosnia and Herzegovina native Nina Secerbegovic on the roster, played on the Bosnian national Fed Cup team in 2009. This spring, Burgic took home the ITF clay court tournament in Hvar, Croatia. In 2009, Burgic reach the Round of 32 in singles and the quarterfinals in doubles of the European Junior Championships in Switzerland.

For her career on the ITF circuit, Burgic has reached the semifinal of seven tournament including four tournament finals. She has won two career tournaments, adding a victory in Vallduxo, Spain in 2008 to last spring’s win in Hvar, Croatia.

The Lady Bears will be back on the court next weekend on May 14-15, as they host the first two rounds of the NCAA Team Championships at the Baylor Tennis Center. They will take on UT-Arlington at noon on Saturday, May 14. Oklahoma will take on Cal Poly earlier in the day, while the winners of each match will meet on Sunday, May 15, at 2 p.m. for a chance to advance to the round of 16.
