Baylor freshman women's tennis player Carolin Walter will begin competition in the NCAA Women's Singles Championships on Monday, May 24 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
Walter will take on Alabama's Robin Stephenson in first-round action at 11:30 a.m., on Monday. Stephenson, a sophomore, is ranked No. 28 and is 22-12 on the season.
With her selection to the singles portion of the NCAA Championships, Carolin Walter became the first Baylor underclassman on the women's team to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Jahnavi Parekh was the first Baylor woman selected for the tournament which she accomplished in 2000 when she was a junior. Parekh and Katja Kovac (a junior) were selected in 2001. Walter, ranked No. 50, has played at No. 1 all season for the Bears where she has produced a 25-10 season record, she is 14-9 in dual matches.
The winner of the Walter/Stephenson match will play the winner of the Sasha Podkolzina (Cal)/Alexis Gordon (Florida) match on Tuesday. Gordon is ranked No. 2 nationally and is seeded fifth in the tournament.
