Athens, Ga. -
Junior Zuzana Zemenova continues to advance in the NCAA Singles Championships at the Dan McGill Tennis Campus at the University of Georgia, she has now advanced to the tournament semifinals.
Zemenova, ranked No. 18 and the 2005 NCAA singles champion, eliminated UCLA's Tracy Lin in three sets on Saturday. Zemenova claimed victory in the first set 6-2 but narrowly lost the second 7-6(3). She regrouped in the third and final set and triumphed 6-2.
Zemenova will now play face the tournament's top-seeded and nation's top-ranked player, Audra Cohen of Miami. Cohen, a junior, enters the semifinal match with a 40-2 season record. Her two losses have come at the hands of Fresno State's Melanie Gloria, who Zemenova defeated in the round of 16, and Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller.
Zemenova's season singles record now stands at 26-7, including a 12-5 record versus ranked opponents. Cohen and Zemenova met earlier this season in the National Team Indoors where Cohen posted a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over the Baylor junior. Zemenova is the only non-seeded player to advance to the semifinals, joining fourth-seeded Lindsey Nelson of USC and second-seeded Megan Falcon of LSU.
"ZZ played an extremely tough opponent today. Lin from UCLA has played some of her best tennis over the last week, helping her team make the team final. She gave ZZ all she could handle and forced her to raise her level of play in the third. I was really proud of the way ZZ handled herself in this tough situation," said head coach Joey Scrivano.
Live scoring and results will be posted on the internet on both the University of Georgia Athletic Association's official web site www.georgiadogs.com and at ncaasports.com.
