WACO, Texas - Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center was chosen as one of 15 host sites for the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 25-28, 2013, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced recently.
The Lady Bears will host three other top-40 teams and will be vying for a qualifying berth into the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in February 2013. No. 22 Texas Tech, No. 30 Rice and No. 40 Florida state will be the second, third and fourth seeds, while Baylor will be the top seed in at the host site.
"We are excited about the teams that have chosen to play in our bracket," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "Rice is a team on the rise making the Sweet 16 this past season, Tech won the Big 12, and Florida State is traditionally a top-25 program. I'm sure these coaches looked at our roster for next season and felt like they have a great chance to advance. We are definitely the underdog, but we'll embrace this great opportunity to prove ourselves."
Baylor will be without the services of its top three players, all graduating seniors in Nina Secerbegovic, Diana Nakic and Sona Novakova. Secerbegovic and Nakic each earned singles All-America honors, while Secerbegovic also claimed the distinction in doubles with sophomore-to-be Ema Burgic.
The group helped lead Baylor to a 25-8 record in 2012, including a berth into the program's eighth consecutive Round of 16 at the NCAA Team Championship.
Along with Burgic, Baylor will also return her fellow sophomore-to-be teammates Megan Horter and Nicole Kosakowski, as well as junior-to-be Jordaan Sanford. All four players will be entering their second season in Scrivano's program.
