ONTARIO, Canada - Baylor freshman Taylor Ormond won the 2008 Canadian University Championship final on Saturday afternoon at the Rexall Centre.

The event features 16 of the brightest college stars in the country. A total of eight male and eight female athletes qualified for the tournament by winning regional playdowns contested throughout the summer in Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec.

Ormond, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, emerged victorious to collect her first university national championship. She made quick work of her opponent, Montreal's Stephanie Roy, dropping only three games en route to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

"I feel like I played well for the whole tournament," said Ormond. "My forehand and serve were very effective which always gives me a big advantage."

Ormond got off to a quick start taking a 4-1 lead in the first set. Following a three-hour rain delay, Ormond picked up right where she left off, keeping momentum to finish the set 6-1. She did not lose serve throughout the entire match, and cruised to a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 win.

"I've been back in Waco for about a month now and have been working a lot on my game," said Ormond. "I've been working a lot on my serving and backhand. The time off has been good and I am 100% rested and ready for the college season."
