Complete ITA Rankings
SKILLMAN, N.J.- Baylor's women's tennis team was well-represented in the national preseason individual rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association recently.
The Lady Bears boasted four ranked singles players, one ranked doubles tandem and one ranked on the freshman/newcomer top-10 list. The rankings include a trio of Baylor seniors, along with two BU newcomers.
In singles, senior Sona Novakova will begin the fall season ranked 13th after playing much of the 2011 season at the No. 1 spot in the Baylor lineup. Novakova was second on the team with 30 wins and first on the team with 14 wins over ranked opponents.
Senior Nina Secerbegovic is ranked 23rd and is coming off an All-American season in which she led Baylor with 31 singles victories. She was second on the team in 2011 with 12 wins over ranked opponents.
The third ranked senior is Diana Nakic, who had a 30-win season in her first year in a Baylor uniform. After transferring from Georgia State, Nakic made an immediate impact going a perfect 11-0 in conference and 17-0 overall at the No. 3 spot in the BU lineup.
Maryland transfer Jordaan Sanford will begin the year at No. 97. A sophomore, Sanford played the No. 1 and No. 2 positions at Maryland before transferring to Baylor in the summer. She was 20-12 last year for the Terps.
In doubles, the duo of Novakova and Secerbegovic will start the season ranked No. 10 after earning a spot in the NCAA doubles championship last season. The pair put together a record of 9-2, including a 2-1 mark against ranked opponents.
Also in the ITA's rankings was freshman Ema Burgic. The newcomer out of Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, earned a spot at No. 4 in the freshman/newcomer rankings.
Baylor will begin its fall tournament season with a solid group at the ITA Riviera All-American in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Prequalifying begins on Oct. 1, followed by the qualifying and main draw rounds running through Oct. 9.
