WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team will host their first fall tournament when eight teams join the Bears this weekend for the HEB-Baylor Fall Tennis Invitational (Sept. 19-21). Play will begin on Friday morning at 8 a.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center and conclude with championships matches in both singles and doubles on Sunday.
In his quest to prepare his team for Big 12 and NCAA competition, head coach Joey Scrivano has assembled an impressive field for the tournament. Five of the eight teams participating were ranked in the final 2003 ITA rankings. Joining Baylor at the tournament will be Auburn, Arizona, Kentucky, Mississippi State, SMU, Texas, Texas-Arlington and Tulane. Kentucky finished the 2003 season ranked No. 12, Arizona No. 26, Tulane No. 28, Texas No. 33 and Baylor No. 37.
The field includes four players currently ranked among the nation's top. Arizona's Maja Mlakar is the tournament's top-ranked player at No. 18
"We are thrilled to be bringing a tournament of this caliber to Baylor," said Scrivano. "This is a great opportunity for the community to have a sneak peek of our team and watch some fantastic tennis."
Scrivano returns four players, Stephanie Balzert, Zuzana Krchnakova, Izabela Mijic, Daria Potapova, off last season's Big 12 Championship team and has added three talented newcomers, Iva Mihaylova (Bulgaria), Carolin Walter (Germany) and Klara Zrustova (Czech Republic).
