WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team is set to take part in its second fall event as three Lady Bears travel to California for the 2013 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships from Sept. 28-Oct. 6 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
"This is just another opportunity for our players to get better," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "The great thing about playing an event like the All-American is that you get to gauge your level of play against the best in the country. This can be a valuable learning experience. All three of our players really need to focus, buckle down and do what they are doing every day in practice."
The tournament's singles play includes a 64-player pre-qualifying draw that will advance eight players into the 64-player qualifying draw where eight spots for the 64-player main draw will be up for grabs.
Junior Ema Burgic opens her season in the singles main draw on Oct. 3, after a 42-8 overall record last season. She begins 2013 ranked No. 6 in the ITA singles rankings.
Burgic will team up with redshirt sophomore Victoria Kisialeva in the 32-team doubles main draw. Ranked No. 5 in the ITA preseason rankings, Burgic and Kisialeva finished last season with a 25-3 overall record, going 19-3 in dual-match play.
Meanwhile individually, No. 114 Kisialeva and senior Jordaan Sanford, ranked No. 97, will be representing the Lady Bears in the prequalifying singles on Saturday. Kisialeva will take on Sarah McLean of Arkansas, while Sanford will face Minnesota's Natalia Pintusava in the first round. Kisialeva was 14-19 last season. Sanford compiled a 17-11 overall record during her junior season, going 13-8 in dual-match play.
Hosted by UCLA at the Riviera Tennis Club for the 29th year, the Riviera/ITA All-American pre-qualifying draw is held on Sept. 28-29, followed by the qualifying draw on Oct. 1-2 and the main draw on Oct. 3-6.
