WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team is set to play in its second fall event as it travels to California to compete in the 2012 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships from Sept. 29-Oct. 7 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Hosted by UCLA at the Riviera Tennis Club for the 28th year, both junior Jordaan Sanford and sophomore Ema Burgic will represent the Lady Bears in the 64-player pre-qualifying singles round, which take place from Sept. 29-30. Both players must win three rounds to advance to the qualifying round, which kicks off from Oct. 2-3. Main draw action is slated from Oct. 4-7.
"It will be great experience for the girls because they're able to play a collegiate grand slam," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "All the best players are going to be playing at this event, and it's such a huge draw to get through the prequalifying to the qualifying and the main draw. If you're in the main draw, you know you're one of the elite players."
Ranked at No. 119 in the 2012 ITA preseason singles rankings, Sanford will first face University of Iowa junior Ruth Seaborne in the first round. Sanford compiled a 23-8 overall record during her sophomore season, going 15-4 in dual-match play and 8-4 in tournament play.
In the first round, Burgic will face Columbia junior Bianca Sanon. During her freshman season, Burgic tallied a 17-7 overall record, with a 16-4 record in dual-match play and 1-3 in tournament play.
Sanford and Burgic, who earned ITA All-American honors last season in doubles with Nina Secerbegovic, will also be competing together in the 32-team doubles main draw from Oct. 4-7. The pair won its only match together last season.
