WACO, Texas - Baylor's women's tennis team stays at home this weekend for the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's Texas Regional Championships on October 16-20. The tournament's first three days will be held at the Waco Regional Tennis Center before moving back to the Baylor Tennis Center during the final two days.
"This fall, we've spent a lot of time trying to evaluate what it's going to take for us to get over the hump," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We feel like we've been knocking on the door these last couple of years. But we know we've got to get better. If we were the best team, we would have reached the summit already. So we're aggressively trying to figure out a formula that's going to help us win a championship."
In addition to Baylor, this event will feature the top players from Division I schools from the Texas Region, including Big 12 Rivals Texas, Texas Tech and Texas A&M.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, November 5-8, hosted by the Yale University in New Haven, CT. Twenty-four Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country.
"We feel like we have a few players that could win this championship," Scrivano said. "And since the winner of this tournament gets to advance to the national indoors, there's a nice little bonus there at the end to be able to play in a collegiate grand slam. We just finished playing in the (ITA) All-American. And anytime you can earn a spot in a college grand slam tournament, that means you're one of the best players in the country. So I think our players are really excited and motivated to win this championship."
