Women's Tennis Set For USTA/ITA Regional Championships

WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team will send six players north to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships from Thursday through Monday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

"We're just trying to get better every day," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "This tournament is a part of that process. I'm sure our players are excited to compete aganist someone other than their teammates. "

The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top players from across the country. The winners of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships will go on to play in the USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships from Nov. 7-10 in Flushing, N.Y.

The Lady Bears will have six players in the 128-player singles draw, as well as three pairs in the 64-team doubles draw. Seniors Jordaan Sanford and Alex Leatu, sophomores Makenzie Craft, Victoria Kisialeva and Kiah Generette, and freshman Blair Shankle will all compete in the singles draw which begins on Thursday.

Sanford, ranked No. 97 and seeded sixth, will have an opening-round bye. At 2-1 on the season, she will play the winner of Maider Martin (TAMUCC) and Ansley Boarman (ACU) at 4:30 p.m.

In first round action, Leatu will play her first match of the fall vs. UTA's Jessica Birowski at noon.

Craft will take on UTSA's Alena Shichkova at 11 a.m. in first round action. She is 3-1 in her first year at BU.

Kisialeva is ranked 114th and seeded 12th. She has a first-round bye and will play take on the player who wins between Incarnate Word's Taryn Strahl and ACU's Erin Walker at 3:30 p.m. Kisialeva is 2-2 in fall play.

Generette, seeded 16th, has a first round bye, but will take on the winner of Incarnate Word's Kelsey Reblin and TCU's Mimi Fotopoulos at 3:30 p.m. The BU sophomore is 2-1 in fall play.

Shankle, who is 5-1 this fall, will face TCU's Monika Sirilova in first round action at 10 a.m.

In doubles all three BU duos will be in action on Thursday.

Kisialeva and Shankle are seeded fourth and will enjoy a first-round bye before taking on the victor of Texas A&M's Paula Deheza and Mason Strickland and SMU's Anna Kate Anderson and Yana Erkeeva at 1:30 p.m. The BU duo is 5-0 on the season.

Generette and Sanford, seeded ninth will also have a first-round bye, before facing the winner of USTA's duo of Lina Hallgren and Alena Shickova and ACU's Emily Conrad and Nada Marjanovic at 1:30 p.m.

Craft and Leatu will open the day by battling Micah Hermsdorf and Brittney Reed of Abilene Christian at 9 first-round action.
