- Baylor women's tennis head coach Joey Scrivano
announced the signing of Niki Budai to a National Letter of Intent for the 2012-13 academic year on Tuesday.
Budai, a native of London, Ontario, is the first signee of Scrivano's 2012-13 recruiting class and brings a string of success to the program from Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School in her hometown.
"Niki is a fierce competitor with an eagerness to improve her game," Scrivano said. "Those are two qualities that we like to see in our student-athletes. We believe her best tennis is yet to come, and look forward to starting the developmental process with her."
Budai's success started at the U14 level and carried through into her secondary school days at both a provincial and national level. The second-ranked U18 player in Ontario, Budai claimed the U18 Outdoor Provincial title in singles and doubles, as well as the U18 Indoor Provincial doubles title.
"When I came to Baylor on my official visit, I was extremely impressed with everything," Budai said. "The campus is absolutely beautiful and the facilities are amazing. Everyone is so dedicated, focused and welcoming. The players, coaches and staff were very excited to have me join the Baylor family, which was a great feeling."
Budai also won the Ontario Federation singles title in 2009, before placing second in doubles and third in singles in 2010. At the U14 level, Budai won the Canadian national title in doubles, while finishing runner-up in singles.
