WACO, Texas - TCU hit .274 on the way to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 victory over Baylor Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center. The Horned Frogs used a balanced offensive attack and took advantage of 33 combined errors by the Bears to improve to 13-7 overall and 2-4 in Big 12 competition.

Baylor's (9-12, 1-4) 33 errors were the second most in a 3-set loss this season for the Bears, which was just one less than the Bears' 34 against Colorado, Sept. 14. Baylor hit a respectable .231 for the match but suffered seven service errors and six receiving errors in the loss.

TCU's Natalie Gower had 10 kills while Ashley Smith added nine in the win for the Horned Frogs. Gower hit .300 with just two errors on 20 attempts, and she added five total blocks to lead TCU.

In the first set Baylor trailed 16-9 and battled back to within one point of the lead five times after that seven-point deficit, but fell short. Then, TCU used the momentum of the set one victory to jump out to a 7-1 lead, highlighted by three kills and two service aces from Gower for TCU on the run. Baylor was unable to recover from the slow start in set two, and in set three, Baylor's only lead was at 2-1.

In the losing effort for the Bears, Zoe Adom hit .294 with 15 kills with Laura Jones adding nine. Mackenzie Mayo recorded double-digit digs for the 15th time this season and for the ninth time in the last 10 matches, leading Baylor with 11.

  • Zoe Adom had 15 kills with five attack errors on 34 attempts to hit .294 for the match. Her 15 kills were the most by the senior outside hitter in a 3-set match this season.
  • Mackenzie Mayo had 11 digs, marking the 15th time this season she's reached the double-digit digs mark, and the ninth in the last 10 matches for Baylor.
  • Thea Munch-Soegaard recorded her 350th career kill with her second kill in the match Wednesday night; she finished with eight.

33 - Baylor's combined errors on the match: 20 attacking, seven service, and six receiving marking the second-most in a 3-set match this season for the Bears behind 34 combined errors against Colorado Sept. 14.

45 - Baylor had 45 team kills, and matched TCU in digs and team blocks at 37 and 6.0 respectively, but still picked up the loss.

Coach Jim Barnes on Baylor's performance against TCU
"We started slow and paid the price. Most of the night we had more kills, more blocks more digs. The first two sets, that was the case, but we started in too big of holes. We had a few more errors than them, those errors came early, and that' what put us in the hole. And, so slow  starts and not serving with confidence kept us from breaking the team down."

The Bears will play host to Oklahoma (15-4, 3-2) Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Ferrell Center in another Big 12 matchup.
