WACO, Texas - The Baylor Bear volleyball team will look to put a rough 2013 season behind them, beginning Friday with a clean slate. BU will play three matches between Friday and Saturday at the Hampton Inn Waco North Baylor Invitational, beginning with Abilene Christian Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
The Bears went 12-20 overall last season, which was the program's fewest wins total since the 2004 season. However, two starters missed much of the season due to injury, and Baylor head coach Jim Barnes said he is optimistic about a new season.
Katie Staiger and Thea Munch-Soegaard rejoin a cast of veterans and newcomers, after injuries shortened each of their season last year, to make a push for the Bears' first NCAA Tournament berth since 2011.
The season's journey begins with the round-robin tournament that features two Southland Conference teams and a West Coast Conference squad in Portland.
Barnes said the team is eager to face up against competition.
"We've got a lot of weapons and we want to see how we do against an opponent, but we're learning a lot and we're far from a starting lineup," he said. "There's a lot to learn this weekend."
Abilene Christian competes in the Southland and is in the provisional process of a transition from NCAA Division II to Division I, and the team is under first-year head coach Jason Bibler. Baylor leads the all-time series with ACU, 3-1, but the teams haven't played one another since the 1986 season.
The Bears will turn their attention to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at 10 a.m. The Islanders went 20-12 last season with a 13-5 mark in Southland Conference play. Baylor is 3-0 all-time against TAMCC, and all matches have come in the Barnes era for Baylor.
Baylor closes the tournament Saturday at 7 p.m. vs. Portland, and the two schools haven't faced one another since 1991 in their only meeting, which Portland won. The Pilots went 0-27 last season and have a first-year coach in Brent Crouch to enter the 2014 campaign.
No tournament passes will be sold, and all tickets are $5 per match. Baylor fans can still purchase season tickets starting at $40 by calling the ticket office at 254-710-1000 or visiting baylortix.com/vb14.
