Sept. 12, 2013
WACO, Texas - With nine matches to spare before Big 12 competition begins, the Baylor volleyball team is still looking to find its groove. Off to its slowest start since 1995 at 2-6, the Bears will play host to Appalachian State (6-1), Colorado (5-1) and Northwestern State (1-6) Friday and Saturday at the Baylor Invitational.
The Bears are winless on the road and on neutral court this season, but have picked up both their wins at the Ferrell Center this season against SMU, Sept. 3 and Mississippi State Saturday.
With that it mind, Baylor will look to iron out the kinks this weekend at home with a match against the Demons Friday at 12:30 p.m., the Mountaineers Friday at 7 p.m. and former Big 12 foe, the Buffaloes, Saturday at 6 p.m.
Neither Baylor, nor head coach Jim Barnes has ever faced Appalachian State headed into this weekend's tournament, while the Bears' most familiar opponent, Colorado, leads the all-time series 21-10 with Baylor. CU and the Bears have not played one another since Oct. 27, 2010 when the Bears took their eighth-consecutive victory over CU in Waco. Baylor has won all three previous meetings with Northwestern State, and the last time the two teams met was Aug. 27, 2005.
All four teams will play each other with four matches Friday and two Saturday. Colorado and Appalachian State begin the tournament Friday at 10 a.m., Northwestern State and the Buffaloes will play at 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, the Mountaineers and Demons will play the final neutral match at 3 p.m.
