Sept. 28, 2009
- Just five days after sweeping 11th-ranked Iowa State, Baylor's volleyball team was ranked 19th by the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll. The ranking ties the highest in program history as the 2000 squad also reached 19th.
This season, Baylor received votes in the AVCA Preseason poll, then moved into the rankings at No. 24 on Sept. 14th and remained there last week. But after sweeping the No. 11 Cyclones and Kansas, the Bears made the jump inside the top 20 for the first time since 2000. The 2000 squad started 21st and moved up to 19th with a 4-0 start, but losses dropped them from the rankings two weeks later.
Baylor is off to a 14-1 start in 2009, setting the mark for the best start in program history. At 3-1 in the Big 12, the Bears tied the best start in conference play after opening 3-1 last season. The only loss this season for the Bears came on the road against second-ranked Texas.
Baylor will look to continue its torrid start to the season against Big 12 rivals Missouri and Colorado this week. The Missouri match will be the last of a season-long four-game homestand on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Bears will then travel to Colorado for an 8 p.m. matchup with the Buffaloes on Saturday, Oct. 3.
