WACO, Texas– Baylor volleyball head coach Jim Barnes announced the addition five high school standouts for the 2012-13 season on Thursday.

Barnes’ recruiting class includes four Texas standouts with Plano’s Laura Jones (Plano West HS), Amarillo’s Thea Munch-Soegaard (Amarillo Tascosa HS), Rowlett’s Adrien Richburg (Sachse HS) and Copperas Cove’s Amy Rosenbaum. Sam Hill, the lone out-of-state addition hails from Spokane, Wash., and North Central High School.

“Our 2012 class is one of the top classes in the country,” Barnes said. “They have the ability to continue to move our program into one of the top 20 programs in the country and compete for Big 12 titles. More importantly, this group is full of outstanding students and ideal citizens. Their chemistry and faith as a class is already obvious and will be a great addition to our team.”

By position, the class includes two outside hitters in Jones and Munch-Soegaard, two middle blockers in Hill and Richburg, as well as a setter in Rosenbaum. All five players were each recognized on Prepvolleyball.com’s Senior Aces List, as well as the Under Armour Preseason All-America Watch List. Hill, Munch-Soegaard and Rosenbaum are all scheduled to graduate in December and begin classes at Baylor in January 2012.

Sam Hill, 6-3, Middle Blocker, Spokane, Wash., (North Central HS)
Hill, a middle blocker from Spokane, Wash., earned Greater Spokane League MVP honors in helping lead North Central High School to a second-place finish in the district. Hill was named to the all-GSL first team this season, after earning second team honors as a junior and honorable mention honors as a sophomore. Her accomplishments include being selected to play for USA High Performance in 2009 on the A1 Select Red Team and again in 2010 on the Youth National Training Team. Hill’s success continued in the classroom as she achieved Honor Roll status and is a member of the National Honor Society.

“Sam is one of the most physical middles in the country, and a prototype Big 12 middle,” Barnes said. “She has a huge upside with great athletic ability and a strong arm. She attacks very well in front of the setter, and will be a great compliment to (Adrien) Richburg in keeping Baylor one of the top teams in the country attacking out of the middle.”

Laura Jones, 6-1, Outside Hitter, Plano, Texas (Plano West HS)
Jones, a talented outside hitter from Plano, Texas, is a top 150 Senior Ace honoree by Prepvolleyball.com out of Plano West Senior High School. Jones is an all-district 8-5A performer for the Lady Wolves. In her career, Jones’ accomplishments include USA Volleyball selection and recognition on the Under Armour Preseason All-America Watch List.

“Laura is a very physical, hard-hitting leftside attacker,” Barnes said. “She has the ability to play six rotations and score anywhere on the court. Laura is a very poised player and will provide great consistency to the team.”

Thea Munch-Soegaard, 6-2, Outside Hitter, Amarillo, Texas (Tascosa HS)
Munch-Soegaard, an outside hitter, will join the Baylor squad with high credentials out of Amarillo, Texas, where she was ranked No. 57 nationally by Prepvolleyball.com and earned recognition on the Nfinity Top 50 list. She earned all-state honors for THS and helped the team win its first district title in over a decade in 2010. Munch-Soegaard was named the District 2-5A MVP in 2010. She helped 25th-ranked THS to a 31-14 record in 2011, including a win over 14th-ranked Lubbock (Texas) Coronado High School.

“Thea was a four-year starter and will be a three-time all-state player,” Barnes said. “She is a true, six-rotation leftside with great defensive skills. She has all the necessary shots and is able to terminate the ball with a fluid arm swing and high contact point. Her mentality is as good as they come, and she will be able to have an immediate impact on the program.”

Adrien Richburg, 6-3, Middle Blocker, Rowlett, Texas (Sachse HS)
Richburg, a middle blocker, comes to Baylor from Rowlett, Texas, with an accomplished prep career at Sachse High School. At SHS, Richburg helped lead the team to two district titles and at least the third round in the state playoffs all four years. She was named the District 10-5A Offensive Player of the Year in 2010 and the district’s Blocker of the Year in 2009. A top 150 Senior Ace by Prepvolleyball.com, Richburg helped SHS to a school-record 40 wins as a junior. On the academic side, she is set to graduate in the top 10 percent of her class and is a member of the National Honor Society, while also earning academic all-district honors.

“Adrien is a complete, all-around middle hitter with an outstanding volleyball I.Q.,” Barnes said. “She will be ready to step on the court and handle the college game very quickly. She is especially effective attacking behind the setter and is a very good blocker.”

Amy Rosenbaum, 6-1, Setter, Copperas Cove, Texas (Copperas Cove HS)
Rosenbaum, an accomplished setter from Copperas Cove, Texas, is fresh off a District 12-5A MVP season for Copperas Cove High School. She helped CCHS to a 33-10 record as a senior, earning a bi-district title and finishing second in the district. In her career, Rosenbaum was named the District 12-5A Setter of the Year as a sophomore and junior, while as being named to the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Team twice. Also successful in the classroom, Rosenbaum earned academic all-state honors this season and academic all-district honors all four years.

“Amy is one of the top setters in the country, having the rare combination of height, high volleyball I.Q. and deceptive hands,” Barnes said. “She set for one of the top clubs teams in the nation, Austin Juniors. Amy also has the ability to attack as a setter and will create a tough matchup for opponents.”
