IRVING, Texas– Baylor senior Briana Tolbert was named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while freshman Adri Nora was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team league officials announced on Monday.
Tolbert, a middle blocker, turned in team-leading performances in kills, kills per set and hitting percentage in a breakout final season at Baylor. Nora, meanwhile, played turned in solid numbers at outside hitter before finding her place in the starting rotation on the right side.
Tolbert, a 6-3 native of Houston, Texas, has racked up a team-best 341 kills at 2.80 per set and a .339 hitting percentage, which ranks in a tie for fourth in the Big 12. She ranks second on the team with 102 blocks and 0.84 blocks per set. Starting all 32 matches and playing all 122 sets, Tolbert notched 17 matches with at least 10 kills and had at least 4.0 blocks 11 times. She was also named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week once this season, leading Baylor to wins over Texas Tech and Missouri with a .500 hitting percentage and 33 total kills.
Nora, a 6-3 native of Stillwater, Minn., turned in a solid freshman campaign to rank third on the team with 2.66 kills per set and fourth with 229 kill. Adjusting to the collegiate level at outside hitter, Nora got even better after switching to the right side, notching at least 10 kills in her first five matches at the position. She had 12 matches during the year with at least 10 kills and ranks fourth on the team with 31 total blocks.
Tolbert’s honor marks the fourth consecutive season that Baylor has had a middle blocker earn first-team all-conference honors. Nora is the first Baylor player named to the all-rookie team since current teammate Torri Campbell in 2009 and fourth overall. Under head coach Jim Barnes, Tolbert is the seventh overall all-Big 12 honoree, while Nora is Barnes’ fourth named to the all-freshman team.
Tolbert and Nora, along with the rest of the Baylor squad, will now travel to Stanford, Calif., for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Volleyball Championships and take on No. 22 Michigan on Friday at 4:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. CT. The match will be Baylor’s fourth appearance in the NCAA tournament.
